Yesterday was the anniversary of Rachel Carson’s birthday – she was a thorn in the side of the ‘green revolution’ in agriculture – she observed, was alarmed at, and wrote about the environmental destruction already evident as a result of the use of toxic chemicals for agriculture in the early 1950’s, when some of us were just knee high to a grasshopper, or others just a twinkle in the universe.
It is 60 years later.
We still pour these toxic chemicals onto our soils – in ever increasing quantities – because ‘we need to feed the world’ ; but in the process we have contaminated every level of our fragile environment, and worse still, the food that is produced this way effectively undermines our health .
She must be turning in her grave today.
